Archdiocese Settles With Clergy Sex Abuse Victim One Year since 22 Million Dollar Settlement Diocese Has "Quietly" Settled with Other Clergy Abuse Victims Victims Plead with Public to Help Keep Children Safe FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 3, 2006 WHAT At a sidewalk news conference, clergy molestation victims will announce the recent settlement by the Archdiocese of Hartford with yet another survivor of Father Daniel McSheffery. The archdiocese settled with 43 victims a year ago for $22 million. WHEN Tuesday, October 3, at 11:00 a.m. WHERE In front of St. Augustine Church, 10 Campfield Ave. Hartford, CT WHO A victim will speak for the first time publicly regarding his abuse and to announce his settlement with the Archdiocese of Hartford. He will be supported by leaders and members of the local chapter of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests and Voice of the Faithful. WHY Since 2002, at least eight men have accused Fr. Daniel McSheffery of sexually abusing them. McSheffery, who is in his mid-70s lives in Florida now but served in Connecticut for decades until the allegations first surfaced in 2002. While McSheffery denies any wrong doing, the diocese continues to settle with victims. In October of 2005 the Archdiocese of Hartford settled clergy sex abuse cases with 43 victims for $22 million. SNAP believes that is just the tip of the iceberg. We fear many victims are still trapped in silence and self blame, that the archdiocese has only done the minimum - and only when forced. To date, sixty-seven priests have been credibly accused of sexual abuse in Connecticut. The church leadership has covered up accusations, threatened victims, and stalled legal proceedings in an effort to make this problem go away. It is time for the church, like any other organization, to allow civil authorities to investigate and prosecute these cases when they arise to help keep children safe. SNAP would like Hartford to set an example for the rest of the country by actively seeking out victims and working with them to find justice and healing.
